Description([Paris?]: 1939) Octavo; 6 ff. plus 9 plates; original publisher's printed wrappers, green paper portfolio with original engraving (cream-colored phase box).
It is unclear who exactly published this portfolio; it was assembled, clearly under the leadership of Hayter (through the Atelier 17), and sold to benefit the Spanish Republican Children's Fund. Some catalogues cite Spender as the publisher; others Atelier 17. The printing of the typography was completed 1 March 1939 by Gonzalo More, New York. As it was published at the time Hayter was moving to New York, it is possible the production of the book mainly took place there. Atelier 17 and Henri Hecht printed the plates, most of which are engravings, but not all (Kandinsky a drypoint, etc.). This is copy no. 99, from an edition of 101, plus 12 copies for the collaborators. In addition to a separate print, Hayter also engraved the title plate for the portfolio cover. The text consists of a poem by Stephen Spender, Fall of a City, printed in English and in French, translated by Aragon.
