Description(New York: G. P. Putnam & Son; London: Sampson Low & Co., 1867) 36.6 cm; 477-546 pp., plus extra title page and illustrations; 19th-century gilt-stamped red morocco (Matthews).
This is the so-called "Large Paper" issue, and has been extensively extra-illustrated. The extra title page dated 1877 presumably refers to the date when the volume was rebound with the illustrations; it is not a publication date.
This volume contains drawings by William Croome, George A. Baker (four drawings), Edward Harrison May (two drawings), Jasper Francis Cropsey, and Jervis McEntee (a pencil drawing and an oil sketch), as well as several portrait drawings by Benjamin Lander. Five drawings are attributed to John William Casilear, as they are bound with prints after his works and resemble engraver's designs; a drawing and gouache are attributed to Sanford Robinson Gifford, as they also are bound with prints after his works. This volume is also notable for containing a large group of prints after eccentric designs by Sylvester Genin.
The MFA has another extra-illustrated copy of this title; see accession number 1961.364.
