Provenance1517, upon the artist's death, probably by inheritance to his pupil and heir, Fra Paolino da Pistoia (b. 1488 - d. 1547), Florence; probably given by Fra Paolino to his pupil, Suor Plautilla Nelli (b. 1523 - d. 1588), Convent of S. Caterina da Siena, Florence; about 1725/1727, probably sold by the Convent of S. Caterina to Francesco Niccolò Gabburri (b. 1676 - d. 1742), Florence and, in 1730, bound with 40 other Fra Bartolommeo drawings into an album; after 1742, album sold by Gabburri's heirs to Mr. Kent (dealer) and sold in London [see note 1]. Thomas Phillipps, 1st Bt. (b. 1792 - d. 1872), Thirlestaine House; by descent within the family [see note 2]. 1925, purchased in Ireland by a private collector; November 20, 1957, anonymous ("property of a gentleman") sale, Sotheby's, London, lot 5 [see note 3], to Colnaghi, London, on behalf of the MFA. (Accession Date: November 20, 1957)

[2] Richard Day, Ltd., An Exhibition of Old Master Drawings (New York and London, 1988), cat. no. 8, identifies another drawing from the same album as having belonged to Thomas Phillipps and then members of his family. [3] The album was broken up at this time. According to the auction catalogue (p. v), the drawings "were bought by the present owner in Southern Ireland in 1925."
