DescriptionCharles Lindbergh medal, fourth Issue of the Society of Medalists, 1931. Bronze, gold patina. Obverse: Dominating surface is a portrait of the head and shoulders of Charles Linbergh, wearing an aviator's hat, goggles around his neck. The wings of an airplane extend behind his head. Inscribed around upper surface: "CHARLES - AWVSTVS - LINDBERGH -". To right of Lindbergh's neck is: Reverse: The perils threatening Lindbergh's transatlantic flight are personified in three figures: a crowned skeleton with drapery, a male figure blowing wind, and a female figure holding lightning bolts. Lindbergh is represented in the center as an eagle and above and behind the design is inscribed "LONE EAGLE". Inscribed on side of medal (.5 cm. width). At top: "The Society of Medalists Fourth Issue". At bottom: "Medallic Art Co. N.Y.".
