DescriptionSociety of the Sisters of Bethany; may have been designed by Sir J. Ninian Comper (1864-1960). Silk, damask; appliquéd embroidered orphrey and hood. Black silk damask. Appliquéd banderoles of yellow silk damask embroidered in black silk with the following inscriptions: (Left) Kyrie eleyson Xpe eleyon Kyrie eleyson. Requiescant in pace post tenebras spero lucem (Right): Requiem eternam dona eis domine et lux perptua luceat eis (from the Requiem). (Hood): Sewn to cope fabric. Metallic ground with appliquéd polychrome silk embroidery of St. Michael, in robes, spearing the dragon and weighing souls. Details and outlines in gold couching. Condition: very good; some wear to gold ground of hood. Given to the Society of Saint John the Evangelist in 1935 in memory of the Rev. Andrew Chalmers Wilson.
