Inscriptions「(関防印)/北斎辰政か画才は寸馬豆人の小なるえお以て丈山尺樹の/大成に明らむ猶是を足れりとせす文化改元の初夏/護国精舎の庭上に於て百七十畳の佛像を筆せり/精神海洋をも渡りぬへ□葛浦陶子なるもの絶妙を/感して形容を□の帋に写さしめ予に開眼をもとむ/銘に日/花は無くても 鳥は啼く/月か冴えれは 雪か降る/咲く散るの欲を離れて若葉哉/凉雲斎抱山」

「竪十壱間幅八間/凡百七十六畳/筆三俵の藁を以し/墨を斗る事三斗余/隈に椶櫚の箒を用」

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
