DescriptionExport for American market. Hexagonal shape with painted decoration en grisaille and gold around perimeters. On blue-gray ground. At center, coat of arms of Vaughan impaling Hallowell, inscribed Samuel Vaughan and motto "IN PRUDENTIA ET SIMPLICEIATE". Copied from engraved bookplate with different motto designed for Samuel Vaughan by Chippendale. Chinese bird and landscape motifs in 4 vignettes around rim. Made for Samuel Vaughan soon after his marriage to Sarah Hallowell of Boston in 1747. Condition: Several small chips around rim. Set with 1976.631.
