DescriptionOne of two plates (see 69.391), made for export to the American market. Hexagonal, white ground. In center is coat of arms of Sargent in shield shape with three dolphins and black chevron. Spread-winged orange bird at top. Scroll inscribed with motto, NEC QUAERERE HONOREM NEC PERNERE (Neither seek nor spurn honor), which was used in England by the Viscounts of Bolingbroke and in the United States by the Sargent family. Surrounded by delicate flowers. Around edge is scallop of red beading with decoration of red and purple flowers alternating with various insects. Gold twist design around edge of bowl.
