During the early nineteenth century, the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory produced many "picture plates" painted with scenes that faithfully reproduced old master paintings; this one, copied from Peter Paul Rubens's The Four Continents of about 1615. The elaborate border decoration, with raised and flat gilding, is typical of the factory's high-quality, luxury production.
