During the early nineteenth century, the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory produced many "picture plates" painted with scenes that faithfully reproduced old master paintings; this one, copied from Peter Paul Rubens's The Four Continents of about 1615. The elaborate border decoration, with raised and flat gilding, is typical of the factory's high-quality, luxury production.

DescriptionGround dish center decoration after Ruben's The Four Continents, border elaborately gilded reserves, alternating with oval medallions surrounded by blue rims with overlay of gilt leafage, center painting signed by Herr.
