Illustrations to La Fontaine's fables.

An octavo format edition of La Fontaine's Fables with illustrations copied or derived from those designed by Oudry in the 1755-59 folio edition (MFA copy: BR1289). Donor's inscription on front pastedown: "Mediocre engraving, not nearly as good as the Leiden edition 1786 engraved by Punt which vide.... Bought to show contemporary poor engraving and as another edition of the Fables." The MFA copy of the Leiden edition is 37.1461a-c.
ProvenanceClement C. Moore, New York (1779-1863, professor and author of "A Visit from St. Nicholas [The Night before Christmas]); acquired in 1926 by William A. Sargent, Boston (1858-1936), by whom bequeathed to MFA, November 17, 1937.
