Description(Paris and Amsterdam: Didot jeune, for J. E. Gabriel Dufour, l'an VII [1799]) Large quarto, two vols. in one; [v. 1] 107 leaves, plus 9 plates (not all bound in); [v. 2] 116 ll., plus 6 plates (not all bound in); modern gilt-stamped half red morocco, marbled paper boards.
Literary illustrations. The larger-format edition of two published in 1799 with illustrations after Monsiau and English and French text on facing pages. This is the primary edition; the plates in the other (MFA copy: 37.1681a-c) are reduced copies of these. This copy, formerly in the Robert Hoe collection, contains an extra eight proof impressions of the plates before captions and in several cases in pure etched states. In addition, there is a reversed copy of one plate (v. 2, betw. pp. 144-45).
