Description(Paris: l'auteur [i.e., Helman], et Ponce [1788]) Small folio; 50 leaves; contemporary[?] gilt-stamped marbled paper boards, red morocco spine label.

Illustrations of historical events in China; engraved text. According to Cohen-de Ricci, the illustrations in this edition are composed of reduced versions of large plates after the designs of the Jesuit missionary Jean Denis Attiret (1702-1768). The original edition, commissioned by the Emperor of China, was almost entirely sent there, and this set was published as a record, by the engraver, Helman, and another engraver, Ponce. It is entirely engraved, and consists of title, dedication, and 24 plates alternating with leaves of engraved texts. The vignette on the dedication page was designed by Monnet. The MFA also owns (37.2341) the Abrégé historique des principaux traits de la vie de Confucius célèbre philosophe chinois, also engraved and published by Helman the same year.
ProvenanceAcquired in 1928 by William A. Sargent, Boston (1858-1936), by whom bequeathed to MFA, November 17, 1937.
