Description(Paris: Crapelet, for Desray, 1808) Octavo, four vols.; (v. 1) lxvi pp. [1 f.] 323 pp., plus plates; (v. 2) [2 ff.] 400 pp., plus pls.; (v. 3) [2 ff.] 424 pp.; plus pls.; (v. 4) [2 ff.] 428 pp., plus pls.; modern gilt-stamped half blue morocco, marbled paper boards.

Literary illustrations; portrait of author. Edition with translation by Ange-François Fariau de Saint-Ange. The illustrations are those from the 1767-71 edition, without the borders and with captions. The engraving has probably been reinforced. There were 19 engravers, including Baquoy, de Ghendt, de Longueil, Née, Saint-Aubin, et al. The unsigned frontispiece with a medallion portrait of Ovid is new for this edition, as is the portrait of Saint-Ange (lacking in this copy). In addition, this copy has been extra-illustrated with a set of small-format copies of John Flaxman's illustrations to Hesiod, engraved by Reveil; and 53 lithographs after compositions from the Metamorphoses by Alexander Zick. Also bound in after p. lxvi is a leaf with four letterpress spine labels intended for the use of a binder.
ProvenanceAcquired in 1903 from Lucien Gougy, Paris, by William A. Sargent, Boston (1858-1936), by whom bequeathed to MFA, November 17, 1937.
