Description(Paris: Chez Aubert, 1839) Quarto, two vols.; unpaged [each vol.: 104 ff., plus 2 ff. advertisement]; original publisher's pink (v. 1) and blue (v. 2) wrappers bound in contemporary half gilt-stamped red morocco, marbled paper boards.
First edition, the first two of three volumes (all published). In all, the three contained 150 full-page illustrations, primarily lithographs, used in previous journals published by Aubert, and furnished with new commentaries for each plate by Alhoy, Huart, and Philipon. The larger lithographs (by Daumier) were trimmed and furnished with new captions; the smaller subjects were supplied with decorative borders. The MFA copy contains only the first two volumes, both dated 1839, and the covers of which advertise 100 plates, indicating that the third volume, dated 1840, was originally unplanned and presumably issued because of demand for the first two. Of the 98 lithographs in these two volumes, Daumier supplied 36, Gavarni 29, Bouchot 22, Benjamin 4, Bourdet 3, Pigal 2, and one by Traviès (one further plate is unsigned). Grandville supplied 2 wood engravings. The wood-engraved vignette before each text is after Wattier. Some copies were hand-colored.
At the end of each volume is a four-page catalogue of illustrated books from Aubert.
