Literary illustrations

According to Brunet (III, 760), these illustrations would have derived from a series that first appeared in an 1813 edition published by Nepveu, who commissioned the plates to illustrate an unillustrated edition first published by Didot in 1795. Bound into this 1878 Bécus edition is an original[?] title page from an 1820 Nepveu edition. Brunet also says that Nepveu originally commissioned illustrations from Duplessi-Bertaux and Coiny, but that they were rejected as inferior, being replaced by the present versions.
