Description(Paris: Georges Hurtrel, 1884) Small octavo; 216 pp., plus plates; contemporary half gilt-stamped red morocco, marbled paper boards (original publisher's pictorial paper wrappers bound in).

Literary illustrations with devilish themes. Avril contributed four etchings; Fraipont designed the numerous text vignettes and the cover decorations. Rousseau and Gillot are credited with the "engraving," but probably effected the photomechanical reproduction of Fraipont's drawings.
ProvenanceAcquired in 1909 by William A. Sargent, Boston (1858-1936), by whom bequeathed to MFA, November 17, 1937.
