Champs; original publisher's printed wrappers bound in).

First edition with Beaumont illustrations, etched by Boilvin, consisting of author portrait plus 10 plates; each print is present in two states before and after caption. This copy is one of 20 printed on china paper, and is numbered 26 from a total edition of 220.

Bound in is an incomplete (19 of 20) set of plates etched by de Mare after Fragonard and Touzé, with its title page, of Contes de La Fontaine--Les vingt estampes dessinées par Fragonard et Touzé (Paris: L. Conquet, 1881). This set is numbered 168, from the printing of 100 of the third (of four) states of the illustrations.

Further bound in are another series of plates after the Fragonard drawings (originally commissioned by Didot for the 1795 edition), and several plates for the Contes after Lancret, Pater, and Vleughels, among others.
ProvenanceAcquired in 1905 by William A. Sargent, Boston (1858-1936), by whom bequeathed to MFA, November 17, 1937.
