Catalogue Raisonné Cohen-de Ricci 594; Ray, French Illustrated Book, 3; Bibliothèque nationale, Inventaire 18th century, v. 10 (Gillot), nos. 31-98
Description(Paris: Jean Baptiste Coignard, for Grégoire Dupuis, 1719) Quarto; 204 leaves; 18th-century gilt-stamped brown calf.

Allegorical frontispiece; illustrations to fables. Third edition of La Motte's fables, but first with these illustrations, some 68 of which are after the drawings of (and mostly etched by) Gillot. The frontispiece is by Tardieu after Coypel; the other fables are engraved after Coypel, Ranc, Picart, and Massé. The title vignette is by Simonneau after Vleughels. This copy has losses on the title page and the first fable of the first "livre." It seems to be printed on thicker paper, as it is almost two centimeters thicker than the Sargent copy.

The MFA owns another copy of this edition (37.1728) and a copy of the Amsterdam 1727 fourth edition with copies after these illustrations (37.1631).
ProvenanceG. Mathias, Paris, from whom purchased by MFA October 4, 1934.
