DescriptionLong-sleeved brown silk satin outer robe (uchikake) with padded hem and large-scale design of a blossoming plum tree in light and dark brown, white and green silk embroidery with three small crests with backside of chrysanthemum (uragiku) in gold along the top at the neck and sleeves; reddish-orange silk crepe lining with "waistband," interior resist dyed and embroidered with branches and sparrow.

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
