Description(Paris: Rittner et Goupil; Lerebours; Hr Bossange [1840-1842]) Oblong folio, two vols.; (v. 1) half-title, plus 54 plates; (v. 2) half-title, plus 58 pls.; contemporary half gilt-stamped black morocco, brown textured cloth covers.

Photographic illustrations of cities and sights in Europe, Africa, and the U.S. These two volumes are composed of 112 views of cities and sights in Europe, Africa, and the U.S. taken from daguerreotypes--the process having been invented in 1839. The subjects were chosen by Lerebours from some 2,000 images. As many as 114 plates are found in copies of the Excursions, and their makeup varies considerably, probably being assembled to order by purchasers. Two of the plates (nos. 1 and 19 in vol. 1) are examples of the early photomechanical process invented by Fizeau, in which the actual daguerreotype plate was converted into an intaglio printing plate. Most of the remaining views were traced and copied onto new printing plates, in aquatint and etching. Ten were traced and drawn on lithographic stones. Many of the views have added figures, as the original exposure times were too lengthy to capture movement (pl. 6 in vol. 1 portrays a daguerreotypist taking a photograph). In addition to Lerebours, the Excursions was published by Rittner et Goupil (until 1840), Goupil & Vibert (1841-1846), and Bossange. Some plates have Rittner et Goupil imprint, some have Goupil & Vibert.

Each volume has a letterpress half title (i.e., not a full title page with imprint); neither has any interleaved explanatory text, as appears in some copies. According to the original publisher's preface (not present), Lerebours indicates that he took most of the daguerreotype views; those of Egypt and the Near East were taken by Horace Vernet and Goupil-Fesquet, those in Spain by Jomard, St. Helena by Emmanuel Lascases, and Niagara Falls by Pattinson. The latter's original daguerreotype is in the Newcastle University Library, Special Collections, along with two Italian views by Lerebours.

The MFA owns another copy of the Excursions (1986.470), with 47 plates. That copy also has a title page with imprint dated 1842; there is no further text. The makeup and order of the plates varies considerably from this copy.
