DescriptionFrederic Crowninshield was born in Boston on 27 November 1845 and died of pneumonia at Capri on 13 September 1918. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard College in 1866, and spent the following decade in Europe, continuing his artistic training in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and with Alexandre Cabanel and Thomas Couture, in London under Irish watercolorist Thomas Charles Leeson Rowbotham, and in Rome under landscape painter Jean-Achille Benouville. He lived for three years in Siena. Upon his return to Boston he took up a position as teacher of drawing and painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (1879-1885), where his students included Edmund Tarbell and Frank Benson. He subsequently moved to New York, where he was active as a mural painter and designer of stained glass. He was the first president of the National Society of Mural Painters from 1895 to 1899. He served as Director of the American Academy in Rome from 1909 to 1911.
The Museum of Fine Arts owns eight watercolors by Frederic Crowninshield. The first two, including the view of Perugia, were purchased from the artist in 1916. Three gifts from friends of the artist followed in 1919 and 1922, and three were given to the museum by the artist's granddaughter in 1945.
