興津の海浜塩竈の辺より津々浦々に小名あれども昔はおしなべて田子の浦と唱ふ 見わたせば名にしあふ富士の高根愛鷹山薩た山興津川の流れ清見か関清見寺三保か嶋々其餘の眺望あげてかぞへかたく実に東海一の勝地といふへし
田子の浦に打出て見れば白妙のふしの高根に雪はふりつつ 山辺赤人

[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
