Teraoka Heiemon is one of the 47 Rônin who avenge their dead lord in the most famous of all kabuki plays, the Storehouse of Loyal Retainers (Chûshingura). At one point, he is even willing to kill his own sister to ensure that the vendetta remains secret, but fortunately that proves to be unnecessary. Danjûrô VIII played the part in 1851 (Kaei 4), 2nd month, in the costume shown here.

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
