熊野別当辨真か子にて 播州書写山に登せ経学せしに 武勇を好ミ 山谷に遊 ここに古池に年久しく住む鯉ありて 害をなすゆゑ ある時 此鯉を退治し 勇力を顕しける

[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
