Inscriptions小栗小次郎は鎌倉権現堂にて 強盗横山の家にとまり 毒酒にてすてに殺さるべきを 照手が貞操にて其場を忍びいで 鬼かげといふ荒馬にのつて藤沢寺へ駈入 急難遁れける されどもその毒気にあたり 終にかきやみとなつて熊野本宮にいたる 照手百千の苦をしのびて車につきそひこれを引行 熊野権現の利生によつて本復なし かたき横山をうちとり 照手をともなひ本国へかへり家をおこし美名をかがやかす

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
