Inscriptions歌麿画 女風俗品さだめ 妾
妻をめとるハ子孫相続のためなれどもその女の性によって子なき時ハ妾を抱へて血脈の絶へざらん事を求む。色に溺るゝ類にハあらず。

應神天皇の御時新羅より呉服(くれはどり)穴織(あやはどり)といへる機女を奉れり。この機女摂津の国池田の里にありてさまざまの機を織しより始まる。

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
