Inscriptions歌麿画 女風俗品さだめ 乳母(めのと)
乳母とか云ふ事、玉依姫 姉君に代はり給ふ縁により妻の弟(めのおとと)と云ふを略して‶めのと"と云ふ。また聖徳太子生れ給ふとき、妹子(いもこ)の▢が姉月益姫をバ乳母に定め給ふよし太子傳に記せり。

女房とハ禁中にて称へさせ給ふ号にて下々の称にあらず。たゞ妻と云ひ、堅気によりて内儀内室などゝいふ。衣類、頭の飾りまでその分限より劣れるを撰ひ、かたちの装ひ、物言ひなど派手ならぬやうに用意あらまほしけれ

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
