This print strongly resembles 21.4017, identified as "Monnosuke II as the Temple Page Shiragiku" in a play of 1772.1. However, both this impression and the Chicago impression of 21.4017 have what appear to be contemporary inscriptions identifying the respective roles and dates. Possibly an attractive scene was repeated a year later in a slightly different play.

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
