In the kabuki play Kagamiyama, wicked Lady Iwafuji is a lady-in-waiting at the court of a princess. When Iwafuji publicly beats virtuous Lady Onoe with a sandal, Onoe is so shamed that she kills herself; but she is avenged by her loyal maidservant Ohatsu, who kills Iwafuji in a climactic swordfight in the palace garden.
Onoe Matsusuke I, later Onoe Shôroku I, played the role in 1803 (Kyôwa 3), 3rd month.
