DescriptionThe summer scene from a set representing the four seasons, based on votive paintings donated to the shrine by local artisans in spring 1839. The other three are represented by hanging scroll paintings in the MFA collection, 11.4610 (fall), 11.7579 (spring), and 11.7580 (winter).

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
