DescriptionThe year is written on the pillar holding the hanging flower arrangement. The months are indicated in the opening lines of the poem to the left; each of the first twelve characters represents a month, and the long months (2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 11, 12) are written larger than the short ones (1, 5, 7, 8, 10, and intercalary 11).

[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States.
