DescriptionThe tondo bears an impression of a late 5th-century BC Syracusan decadrachm engraved by Euainetos depicting the head of Arethusa surrounded by dolphins. Ten palmettes ring the impression. The irregular outline of the coin depiction reflects the fact that the mold was made directly from the original coin.
Provenance1899: with Edward Perry Warren (according to Warren's records: Bought in Rome 1899.); December 1901: purchased by MFA from Edward Perry Warren
