DescriptionThis small planchet Pine Tree Shilling is #16 in Noe's sequence. The characteristics are the short, downward "roots" beneath the tree, the fact that the tree points to the left of the S in the inscription, and the short, thick I in the IN. The reverse die is characterized by the very wide W, the flattening of the beaded ring around the date and the fact that the AN D of AN DON falls immediately below the denomination. This reverse die lasted for a long time and can be seen again--in an advanced state of decay on Noe #19 (92.1533).
