As a young man, the versatile and prolific Okumura Masanobu designed prints for many different publishers before opening his own publishing house in 1719. Many of his early works were sets of twelve related prints that could be mounted as an album or handscroll, as here, or enjoyed separately. This series shows typical customs of the twelve months, associated with various well-known places in the city of Edo.
