The oldest surviving building in the Kyoto area, dating from 951 AD, is the pagoda of the temple Daigo-ji, located in the mountains to the east of the city. Shigemasa’s print shows picnic parties enjoying themselves in temporary enclosures under the trees, emulating the famous cherry-blossom viewing party held there in 1598 by the warlord Hideyoshi, Japan’s ruler at the time.
