DescriptionPink and dull-orange cliffs rise from the pale purple river. Suggestions of castle towers on either side. Gray sky. The Katz, to the right, is a mediaeval castle erected 1393, partly pulled down 1806, near St. Goarhausen; facing it, left, is Rheinfels Castle, near St. Goar. The drawing is possibly connected with an agreement of 1819, never carried out, for Turner to make 36 drawings of the Rhine between Mainz and Cologne, to be engraved and published serially.
