DescriptionStanding outside office of TILLOU and CUTTING / ATTORNEYS AT LAW. Accompanying the drawing is a description of the two men written in pen by Pierre Morand as follows: "Messrs Daniel Webster and Francis B. Cutting
I have but little to add to the description - / of this sketch already in Mr. Curie's possession. Mr. / Cutting was a gentleman of superior acquirements / and refinements, and always elegant in dress, in / striking contrast with the federal judges at that time, Hons. Ulshoeffer and Betts. As a lawyer he stood / at or near the head of his profession, and was gen- / erously patronized by importers who had trouble / under the new Whig Tariff. He seldom went into / Court without a good case. Mr. Webster with whom I became acquainted as / a witness in a custom house case defended by Mr. / Cutting, made a more ponderous impression upon / me than any man in his profession I ever met since. / He expressed surprise at my fluency in English and / thought I ought to study for the bar. The costume / in which he is represented he faithfully adhered to for many years, as also did his later colleague in / the Senate, Mr. Charles Sumner, whom I also well knew / as consulting attorney for a French Syndicate (the Swan lands in Virginia) whom I represented from 1846 to 54.
