Description(Milan: Gottardo da Ponte, 1518) Quarto; 144 leaves [NB: first two quires (aa-bb) bound at end]; nineteenth-century half gilt-stamped brown morocco, marbled paper boards (reddish-brown cloth box).
Illustrations: vision of St. Veronica being offered a wafer by Christ in a cloud of angels (title verso, repeated fol. o6v); eight smaller cuts of further miracles of Veronica
First edition of this “Life and Miracles of St. Veronica“ written by Frater Isidorus de Isolanis of the Monastery of Santa Maria della Grazie in Milan. The woodcuts have been variously attributed to pupils or associates of Leonardo: Bernardo Luini (Passavant, now generally rejected), Cesare da Sesto (Kristeller) , and Marco d’Oggiono (Suida, Mortimer).
