Built by the price regent (later King George IV), Carlton House was the most stylish mansion of the day, famous for its rich colors and sumptuous materials. Tastemakers like the authors of the Microcosm were immensely proud of the building, even if their admiration may have been heightened by the desire to flatter a royal patron.
