French artist Jean Charlot, born in Paris to a Russian émigré father and Mexican mother, spent his childhood immersed in the art and culture of Mexico. In 1921, after serving in World War I, Charlot relocated from Europe to Mexico City, where he worked in the circle of Diego Rivera and the Mexican Muralists. The simplified geometric forms of his figures (note here the cylindrical or circular shape of the woman’s arms, neck, and ear) are based in part on his study or Pre-Columbian sculpture.
