Description(Augusta: Legislature of Maine [1837]) Oblong quarto; 24 ff.; original publisher's wrappers with printed title label (four-flap portfolio, green cloth spine).
This is the first edition of the plates accompanying the text of Jackson's [First] Report on the Geology of the Public Lands in the State of Maine, also published in 1837 by the state legislature. The plates were published separately and are not found bound with the text. Copies vary in terms of which, if any, are hand-colored. Plates 5, 17, and 19 are hand-colored in this copy. Each plate is inscribed in the stone "Graeter del." It is not known for certain if Graeter actually accompanied Jackson on his survey of the state, or just transferred Jackson's sketches onto the stones for these plates. The plates were printed by Thomas Moore, who succeeded Pendleton's lithographic establishment. An engraved trade card for Moore is laid down on the inside upper wrapper of this copy.
