Vase-Painting in Italy (MFA), no. 159.
DescriptionDesign nearly obliterated. Draped figure on the front, scrolls and palmettes around the rest of the body, rays on the shoulder.
Spherical, small.
ITALIAN VASE PAINTING in ITALY, #159 (13.78)
Squat Lekythos
Probably Faliscan
Attributed to the Sokra Group (Pianu)
375-350 B.C.
On the front, a draped figure of indeterminate sex is standing to the left. There is a palmette on the back, scrolling tendrils on the sides, and rays around the shoulder; all but the rays and parts of the figure's cloak are now effaced.
Beazley associated this lekythos with the Phantom Group, but Pianu restricts the group to the unincised oinochoai for shape 7, which, he argues, belong to the second half of the fourth century.
Compare Pianu, Sovradipinte, pl. 17. no. 22
