DescriptionInterior: Cuttlefish, striped fish (probably a bream), mullet, and a horn shell. Added brown and white have been used for many details, and the bodies of the fish are tinted with brown, dilute wash. The central depression has a rosette; the framed wave-pattern around it is repeated on the overhanging rim, a common feature on fish-plates by this painter.
The Black and White Stripe Painter, named for the vertical stripes like those along the back of the bream on this plate, was associated with the Canosan workshop of the Baltimore Painter. His work exhibits features in common with the Arpi Painter and the Hippocamp Painter, the latter a specialist in fish-plates.
