Caskey-Beazley, Attic Vase Paintings (MFA), no. 117.
DescriptionEros flying. Possibly part of an amphora in the University of Vienna (631A) showing Ares and Aphrodite (according to Martin Robertson). If this is true, then the object to the right of Eros may be the draped arm of Ares, rather than a large palmette, as Beazley had thought.
ProvenanceProbably by 1909, Edward Perry Warren (b. 1860 - d. 1928), London and Rome; 1910, sold by Edward Perry Warren to the MFA for $4000 [see note]. (Accession Date: June 2, 1910)
NOTE: Purchase price for MFA accession nos. 10.159 - 10.230. A largely illegible note in the file seems to be dated July 13, 1909, suggesting Warren owned the fragment by that date.
