DescriptionThe Triton, of the Hellenistic type, advances to the right. The back part of the fishy body is hollow, as if attached to some object. This appliqué appears to have come from the right side of the breastplate of a life-sized cuirass or cuirassed statue in metal. It curves slightly to suit the contour of a piece of body armor. Partly corroded. Gilded.
ProvenanceBy date unknown: with Edward Perry Warren (according to Warren's records: Bought in Rome.); purchased by MFA from Edward Perry Warren, December 1901
