DescriptionThe bronze figure is moving forward with right foot; the extended right hand holds a patera (shallow sacrificial bowl), and there is an incense jar (acerra) in the left hand. A toga is draped around the lower body and over the left shoulder. He wears a large floral headdress. Even dark brown patina.
Provenance1959, sold by J. J. Klejman (dealer; b. 1906 - d. 1995), New York, to the MFA for $850 [see note]. (Accession Date: January 8, 1959)
NOTE: According to the dealer at the time of the sale, this came from the ruins of Caligula's barge at Lake Nemi and was thought to have been with the London dealer Spink and Son in 1908. It was also said to have been on the London and New York art markets.
