DescriptionPanther-headed terminal to handle, grooves and cut-out vloutes along shaft and elaborate scrollwork where handle joins cup. Cup cast with honeysuckle ornament in relief on exterior. The panther was associated with Dionysos god of wine.
ProvenanceBy 1960: with Hesperia Art, 2219 St. James Place, Philadelphia 3, Pa. (said to have been found in western Asia Minor with three silver cups bought by the British Museum and a silver cup bought by the Toledo Museum of Art); March 8, 1961: purchased by MFA from Hesperia Art for $ 1,000-.
