A graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Giehler creates geometric and abstracted paintings of industrial landscapes, relying on both freehand drawing and digital imaging in creating his compositions. Giehler references geometric abstraction and color field painting as well as urban and virtual landscapes to create paintings that function both as pure abstractions and recognizable pictorial subjects. In Untitled, forms reminiscent of Piet Mondrian's (Dutch, 1872-1944) iconic modernist abstractions (see 1986.496) are angled and slanted to evoke a virtual landscape and the aesthetics of the computer.
