DescriptionSubject is shown half-length, on an oval canvas, against a dark blue-green background, his head and body turned slightly to the right, his right hand held against the body. The face is that of a man in middle life, with dark heavy eyesbrows over brown eyes, and a thick nose which is broken or disfigured. He wears a brown curled wig, parted in the center and hanging to the shoulders; a vermilion robe faced with gray; white neckcloth with wide ends of lace; lace cuff; retains original carved and gilt frame of red pine or Scots pine (pinus sylvestris).
